Real answers about what Pure Plant Sweet is, where it comes from, how to use it, and why it may be the most important switch you make for your health.

The Basics
Pure Plant Sweet™ is a liquid sweetener made from thaumatin — a naturally occurring protein extracted from the fruit of the Thaumatococcus daniellii plant, commonly called the katemfe plant, native to the tropical rainforests of West Africa. Unlike chemical sweeteners, thaumatin is a real food protein. Your body digests it exactly as it would any other protein — completely and safely. Each 30mL bottle contains 600 drops. One drop sweetens as effectively as one full teaspoon of sugar.
The key difference is what thaumatin is. Stevia and monk fruit are glycoside compounds — plant extracts that are chemically processed and often leave a bitter or metallic aftertaste. Thaumatin is a protein — a 207-amino acid chain that your body recognizes as food. It has a clean, pleasant sweetness with a smooth, lingering finish. In fact, the food industry widely uses thaumatin specifically to mask the bitter aftertaste of stevia in commercial products. Additionally, our formulation includes potassium iodide — providing meaningful daily iodine that stevia and monk fruit products do not.
Thaumatin is approximately 3,000 times sweeter than sugar by weight — and on a molar basis, closer to 100,000 times sweeter. In practical terms: one small drop from our dropper bottle delivers the same sweetening power as a full teaspoon of table sugar. A single 30mL bottle therefore replaces the sweetening equivalent of roughly 600 teaspoons of sugar — or about 1.3 bags of the standard 4-pound sugar bag — while contributing essentially zero calories and zero glycemic impact.
Five ingredients. Each one earns its place:

Water — pharmaceutical-grade purified water as the base.
Thaumatin powder — 99%+ pure, pharmaceutical-grade, sourced from Xi'an Lyphar Biotech (CAS No. 53850-34-3), with Certificate of Analysis on file.
Guar gum powder — a natural plant fiber that provides viscosity and keeps the solution stable.
Potassium iodide — providing bioavailable iodine, supporting thyroid function and overall metabolic health.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) — maintains clarity of the solution and acts as a natural antioxidant preservative.

No artificial colors, no synthetic preservatives, no fillers, no compromises.
At very high concentrations, thaumatin can develop a faint licorice-like residual note — which is why commercial food formulators use it in parts-per-million quantities. Our formulation is carefully dosed so that one drop delivers the right sweetness level without crossing into licorice territory. The experience is a clean, pleasant sweetness that lingers naturally — much closer to sugar than to any herbal note. If you use more than needed, you may notice a subtle lingering sweetness. Simply adjust to your taste.
Health & Safety
Thaumatin has one of the most comprehensive safety records of any sweetening ingredient in the world. It holds GRAS status (Generally Recognized as Safe) with the US FDA, and has been approved as a food additive in the European Union as E957 since 1984. Both EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) and JECFA (the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives) have assigned thaumatin an ADI of "not specified" — the highest possible safety designation, meaning regulators were unable to establish any harmful intake level. It is not classified as dangerous under EU GHS regulation EC No 1272/2008. It is not a carcinogen. It is not a mutagen. It is a protein that humans have consumed safely for centuries.
Thaumatin has zero glycemic impact. Unlike sugar — which raises blood glucose directly — or aspartame — which a landmark 2025 study in Cell Metabolism showed triggers insulin release via vagus nerve activation — thaumatin is metabolized as a protein with no effect on blood glucose or insulin signaling. This makes it suitable for people managing diabetes, pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome, or anyone simply choosing to reduce glycemic load. As always, consult your physician regarding your specific health situation.
FDA approval establishes a regulatory threshold — it does not mean a substance is without biological effect. Aspartame was first approved in 1981 based on studies that are now decades old. More recent research has raised serious concerns. A 2025 study published in Cell Metabolism demonstrated that aspartame triggers insulin secretion via vagus nerve stimulation and promotes atherosclerotic plaque formation — confirmed in both rodent and primate models. In 2023, the World Health Organization's IARC classified aspartame as Group 2B — possibly carcinogenic to humans. The FDA's position has not yet caught up with this emerging science. We believe you deserve better than "possibly carcinogenic."
Thaumatin itself has no glycemic impact and does not trigger insulin response — making it theoretically well-suited for people managing blood sugar. However, we are not a medical product and this is not medical advice. If you have diabetes or are on medications that affect blood glucose, please consult your physician before making dietary changes. What we can say with confidence: thaumatin is a protein, it is metabolized as protein, and it has been used safely in food products consumed by millions of people worldwide including diabetic populations.
Thaumatin is a protein and is generally considered safe for all ages — it has been used in children's medicines in West Africa for generations, specifically to make bitter medications more palatable. Our formulation also contains potassium iodide, which provides iodine — an essential nutrient for children's cognitive development and thyroid function. That said, always consult a pediatrician before introducing any new supplement or dietary change for children.
Vegan: Yes. Thaumatin is derived entirely from plant fruit. All five ingredients in our formula are plant-derived or mineral-based.

Gluten-free: Yes. There is no gluten in any of our ingredients.

Allergen considerations: Thaumatin is a protein, and as with any protein, there is a theoretical possibility of sensitivity in individuals with specific protein allergies — though no significant allergenicity has been documented in the scientific literature. If you have known protein allergies, consult your physician.
How to Use It
Start with one drop per serving. One drop from our dropper bottle is calibrated to deliver approximately the sweetening equivalent of one teaspoon of sugar. For most beverages — coffee, tea, smoothies — one drop is sufficient. For larger batches or recipes calling for more sweetness, scale up one drop at a time. Because thaumatin is extraordinarily potent, less is more. Overuse can introduce a lingering sweet note. It's easier to add than to subtract — so start with one, taste, and adjust.
Yes. Thaumatin is heat-stable and retains its sweetness through normal cooking and baking temperatures. It is also stable across a wide pH range, making it suitable for acidic foods and beverages. One important note: thaumatin does not provide the bulk that sugar does in baking. Sugar contributes structure, browning (Maillard reaction), and moisture retention. When substituting Pure Plant Sweet™ in baking, you may need to adjust other ingredients to compensate for the missing volume. For sweetening beverages, sauces, dressings, and desserts, it works beautifully with no adjustments needed.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Refrigeration is not required but can extend shelf life. Keep the dropper cap tightly closed between uses. The Vitamin C in our formulation acts as a natural antioxidant to maintain freshness. Properly stored, the product is stable for up to 24 months.
Yes. Thaumatin is thermally stable — it does not break down in hot beverages and does not crystallize in cold ones. It dissolves readily in water at all temperatures. One drop works equally well in hot morning coffee, iced tea, cold smoothies, or room-temperature water. It is also stable in acidic environments, so it works well in lemonade, kombucha, and other acidic beverages without losing potency.
The Iodine Question
It's unusual — which is exactly why we did it. Iodine deficiency affects an estimated 2 billion people worldwide, and is increasingly common in the United States as people move away from iodized table salt. Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production, which regulates metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, and cognitive function. Many people who carefully manage their diet — avoiding processed foods, using sea salt instead of iodized salt, eating plant-based diets — are at particular risk of iodine insufficiency. We believe that if you're going to use a sweetener multiple times a day, it should do more than just sweeten. Potassium iodide is the most bioavailable form of supplemental iodine.
Our formulation is calibrated to deliver a meaningful supplemental dose of iodine across typical daily usage — without exceeding safe upper limits with normal use. The daily recommended intake of iodine for adults is 150 mcg, with a tolerable upper intake level of 1,100 mcg. For precise dosing information for your specific health situation, please consult the product label and your healthcare provider. We are committed to providing exact per-drop iodine content on all labeling.
Please consult your physician. Iodine requirements and tolerances vary significantly for people with thyroid conditions including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and Graves' disease. Some individuals with these conditions may need to monitor iodine intake carefully. This is precisely the kind of question your doctor is best positioned to answer with knowledge of your specific diagnosis and medication regimen. We are a food product, not a medical treatment.
